One of the easiest ways to conjure up some Christmas spirit is to put the music on and head into the kitchen. Whether your household leans sweet or savoury, here are five festive favourites worth cooking for a full table — a quick description of each rather than the full method.

Gingerbread cookies

The classic no-holiday-platter-is-complete-without-them bake: warm with ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice, rolled and cut into shapes, then iced however you like.

Finnish mulled wine

A gluhwein-style warmer — red wine, port and spices left to infuse overnight, then gently simmered and served hot. Perfect for cold nights, and it keeps in the fridge for a couple of weeks.

Santa deviled eggs

A fun one to make with kids: halved eggs given red 'hats' and piped cream-cheese trim so each looks like a tiny Father Christmas. A guaranteed crowd-pleaser.

Bacon and Parmesan wreath dip

A smoky, savoury cream-cheese spread shaped into a wreath and trimmed with parsley and red pepper — festive to look at, and made for sharing with crackers.

Mocha yule log

The showstopper: a light cocoa sponge rolled around a coffee-cream filling and finished in bark-textured mocha frosting, ready for a sprig of marzipan holly.
